Whether you are preparing a speech or writing an essay, you must think about the type of audience receiving the information. This is important because it controls the genre in which you will write in. For example, when an author is writing a children’s book he or she will use words that the children can understand and pictures that appeal to them. Knowing your audience also helps you stay focused in your writing. For example, if you are preparing a speech for teens and young adults on the harmful affects of drugs and alcohol, then you are going to have serious tone and persuasive attitude.
